Savoir-Faire

Craft knowledge shaped by continuity, precision, and care.

Since 1977, GAU has upheld the art of light in the purest tradition of French craftsmanship.

Driven by a constant search for excellence, the manufacture designs and produces lighting pieces in which elegance, technical mastery, and artisanal expertise come together.

An exceptional heritage

Based in Vaux-le-Penil, the manufacture brings together craftsmen and specialist knowledge in brass, bronze, metal, glass, and decorative finishing.

It is in the workshops that each luminaire takes shape, assembled and finished with discipline and care, in continuity with gestures passed down from one generation to the next.

At the centre of this tradition are the mastery of movement, the precision of proportion, and the attention given to every detail.

From metalwork and patinas to assembly and electrification for Europe or North America, each stage contributes to the creation of a unique light.

This exceptional know-how, built on patience, precision, and respect for the material, reflects the GAU vision: a luminaire made to endure, a warm and gentle light, and an object that remains satisfying to look at.

Artisan brazing brass components by hand

The craft of metal assembly

At the manufacture, lighting is made by hand, combining traditional craftsmanship with a high degree of technical precision.

Among the essential skills involved is brazing, a crucial stage in the assembly of many of the metal components that form each lighting piece.

Carried out entirely by hand by our craftsmen, brazing allows elements in brass, bronze, and other metals to be joined with remarkable accuracy.

Using a torch and a metal filler rod, the craftsman carefully heats the areas to be joined, creating a connection that is strong, refined, and enduring.

The process demands exact control of temperature, movement, and timing.

Each assembly is executed with care so that the proportions of the piece are respected and the quality of the metal surfaces is preserved before the finishing stages.

Passed down and continually refined within the manufacture, this expertise reflects the standards upheld by our teams: French craftsmanship in which the hand of the artisan remains at the heart of every light we create.

Artisan working brass components in a finishing bath

The craft of metal finishing

Every luminaire begins with the careful selection of its material.

Brass, bronze, steel, and aluminium are worked with precision to reveal the character of the metal and achieve the desired finish.

Our craftsmen bring the same exacting attention to every stage of the finishing process.

The metal may be polished to achieve a deep, even lustre, or satin-finished to create a softer, more restrained surface with a finely textured appearance.

Depending on the finish required, the components are then prepared for electroplating, allowing a range of tones and surface treatments to be achieved.

Each piece is carefully inspected before receiving its final protective treatment, whether a lacquer designed to preserve the appearance of the metal or a precisely applied painted finish.

From the first stages of polishing to the final protective coat, every operation calls for skill, patience, and consistency.

It is this meticulous approach that gives each surface its durability, elegance, and visual coherence, and contributes directly to the quality of every luminaire made in our manufacture.
